From concept to prototype, every piece starts life in our design studio in the heart of London. Although our products are simple, there's more to making a simple leather bag than meets the eye. It takes time, a skilled hand and a sophisticated knowledge of materials to get it right and make a bag that lasts a lifetime.
Every piece is hand built at traditional workbenches in small batches by craftsman using skills that have been passed down through generations of the same family. Alfie Douglas makers are a dedicated group of individuals who take great pride in everything that they make. Each piece is assembled and finished by hand, even the rivets, which are specially made, are hand-hammered.
Our leathers are sourced from the best tanneries in the world. Every single piece of our leather is unique, it has its own grain, structure and character. We match each piece to the function it has been designed for. Like us, leather changes slowly over time. Exposure to sunlight darkens the colour. Everyday use, scratches and natural oils allow it to develop its own character. How you live you life, will be reflected in your bag and will become part of your life story.
Our leathers are prepared using natural vegetable extracts from a variety of wood, bark, fruit, roots and leaves. Environmentally friendly with no harsh chemicals, it’s a slow process taking up to six months from start to finish. The end result is a beautiful rich leather made to last a lifetime.
Leather is a natural product and may be slightly stiff to start with. Over time it softens and will break-in like a favourite pair of shoes. The more you use it, the softer it will become, the more it will change shape, the more it becomes part of you.
Our signature rivets are made for us. They are unbreakable, individually trimmed and hand-hammered meaning they are 100% reliable.

We design and make simple, beautiful, functional bags. Bags designed to share a lifetime of adventure. A bag for work, a bag for play, a bag for life.
Bags so simple, they have taken 4 years to develop. Simple means that nothing is hidden, just raw, real, honest. We don’t make over-complicated bags with fancy catches, pockets and compartments for things we don’t need. We create timeless designs that continuously evolve.
Minimalism isn’t just a look, it’s a way of life. So many items are over-fussy, frivolous, complicated. Life can be the same. Mass production and sharp marketing has turned us into a throw-away society, far removed from the sources of the materials and the people making them. Buying things for the moment and not for life.
Can a bag make your life better? We think so. We make unfussy bags that simply work and look great. Bags that adapt to you, your mood, your style and your activity. Bags that can be worn in totally different ways to suit you. Bags that you can convert into different formats. Not gimmicky, gadgety type things but well thought-out, sensible solutions.
Success starts with failure...After months of failed attempts to design a simple convertible bag, the answer was so simple, we just couldn’t see it. Then one day we could and we liked it. A tiny attachment that enables you to switch the bag from a shoulder bag to a backpack in a matter of seconds, giving you two bags in one.
Why convertible? Carrying heavy stuff around on one shoulder all day can actually cause long term problems to your body, we’re simply not designed to do it. By converting the bag to backpack mode you can re-distribute the weight evenly when you need to. When you need to get in and out of your bag frequently simply convert it back to shoulder bag mode.
Everything is connected, we are a tiny part of an ecosystem made up of a complex network of interconnected systems. These connections run through every part of our business including our suppliers, our people and our customers. We may be tiny, but we are a part of that ecosystem and as such we have to act responsibly to help preserve our planet for future generations.
We aim to produce all products as responsibly as possible. We use only premium quality materials produced under responsible environmental standards. Our leather hides are a by-product of the food industry. Our supply chain is small and we are conscious our impact on our environment.
